In order to qualify for this scholarship, you must have either applied to and been accepted into the University of Melbourne’s graduate research programme, or are presently enrolled in one after fulfilling the program’s prerequisites.

Selection Criteria:

A Research Training Programme Scholarship (Fee Offset) will be awarded to all domestic students who are accepted into the University of Melbourne’s Masters by Research or Ph.D. programmes.

Based on academic excellence, both local and foreign students are given Graduate Research Scholarships that include a salary and fee offset. Candidates who meet the requirements are evaluated based on their research potential in their field of study and the academic standing of their most recent degree. A student’s degree completion at the same level as the research course for which the scholarship is requested, their relevant professional experience, their peer-reviewed publications, their specialized medical training, or their original music compositions could all be taken into account.

How To Apply | Application Process

You will be automatically eligible for the Graduate Research Scholarships if, as a new student, you applied before the course’s application closing date for a graduate research course. After submitting your course application, you will be notified within ten business days that a scholarship application has been added to your record.

Application Deadline

In order to be reevaluated for a scholarship, if you accepted an offer for a graduate research course and postponed starting, you will need to fill out an online application by October 31 in order to be eligible for consideration the following year. After completing the online application, you will be notified that a scholarship has been added to your file within ten business days.

When will I be aware of the result?

As part of their degree offer, domestic students will get an offer for a Research Training Programme Scholarship (Fee Offset).

Separate but about the same time as course offers are announced, offers for Graduate Research Scholarships with a stipend and fee offset are made.

Variations to the Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships

Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS):

The MRS are awarded to deserving local and international students pursuing doctoral or master’s degrees by research.

Scholarships for the Australian Government’s Research Training Programme (RTP):

High-achieving domestic and international students pursuing a Masters or Doctorate by Research degree at the University of Melbourne are eligible to apply for this award, which is funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government. See also the RTP Scholarship Policy of the University.

University of Melbourne’s China Scholarship Council PhD Scholarship:

This scholarship is available to citizens of the People’s Republic of China who want to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of Melbourne. It is offered by the China Scholarship Council and the University of Melbourne in an effort to foster international collaboration.

Benefits of the Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships

Fee offset scholarships:

For students pursuing a master’s degree by research, the full cost offset is available for up to two years, or for up to four years if they are pursuing a doctorate.

Stipend and fee offset scholarships

For students pursuing a master’s degree by research, the full cost offset is available for up to two years, or for up to four years if they are pursuing a doctorate.
For a maximum of two years for students pursuing a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students pursuing a PhD, living allowance of $37,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) will be provided. Limited paid sick, maternity, and parental leave are included in the living allowance, which may be subject to annual indexation.
Students relocating from outside of Australia will get a relocation grant of $3000, or $2000 if they are coming from a state or territory other than Victoria.
For foreign students who need a student visa in order to study in Australia, there is the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership.
